Beans are an essential part of every vegetable plot. Beans that stay small in the ground are ideal for folks with limited space (versus pole beans). For a longer harvest period, you can stagger plantings of bush beans by three weeks. Bush beans are convenient for a homestead garden if you want to can the harvest because they all mature around the same time.

Heirloom bush bean varieties are those that have been around since before 1900, although newer varieties may have been derived from older ones. While these plants are typically simple to cultivate, they may lack the comprehensive pest and disease resistance of current hybrids. However, the higher sensitivity of traditional types is typically more than compensated by by their superior flavor compared to that of many newer hybrids.

If you're looking for bush green beans, these are the best ones to grow in your garden.

Buying Guide

Blue Lake 274

In 1961, the very ancient 'Blue Lake' pole bean was used as a foundation to create the newer 'Blue Lake 274'. Its name may be unremarkable, but the sensitive pods it produces at 5 to 6 inches long are consistently abundant. First, eat as many as possible straight from the garden, and then preserve the rest by canning or freezing. About 60 days pass from when seeds are planted until they are harvested.

Bountiful

The mildew, insect, and rust tolerance of this bush bean is above average. The 'Bountiful' variety produces tasty, stringless pods that can be preserved by freezing or canning. In the early 1900s, the New Green bush bean was renamed to its current moniker. Once the seedlings have grown for 45-50 days, the pods, which will measure 6 to 7 inches in length, can be picked.

Burpee's Stringless

Burpee's Stringless boasts a rich, delicious flavor and a pleasing crunch. This plant, which first appeared in the wild in 1894, is well-known for its prolific growth and resistance to heat and drought. The time between planting seeds and picking pods that are 5 inches long is around 46-50 days.

Cherokee Wax

The 'Cherokee Wax' bean, which dates back to the 1800s but became widely marketed in 1947, is known for the large quantities of disease-resistant yellow pods it produces. Depending on your preference, you can eat them fresh, frozen, or canned after harvest. It takes about 58 days from planting to picking the 6-inch pods.

Contender

The high-yielding and disease-resistant 'Contender,' also known as 'Buff Valentine,' produces excellent pods. Popular with green thumbs ever since its inception in 1949, this bean is renowned for its rapid maturity. When grown under ideal conditions (warm soil), 'Contender' can be harvested in under 40 days.

Porch Pick

This bush bean, known as 'Porch Pick,' is ideal if you're looking for a traditional snap that's also good at staying contained.

This prolific type yields a ton of green pods that are only five inches long yet are crisp, tender, and full of taste.

The tiny leaves and compact stature of these plants make them ideal for growing in containers.

In just 55 days, 'Porch Pick' will deliver a bountiful harvest of bush beans.

Prevail

Is it your goal to find a snap variety that can thrive in almost any environment? The word "Prevail" will ultimately win out.

This open-pollinated variety is able to thrive in a wide range of soil conditions and can withstand high temperatures throughout the summer.

In just 60 days, the tasty, dark green pods set by 'Prevail' are ready to be picked for their bounty.

At maturity, the robust plants measure 16-24 inches in height and exhibit resistance to heat, mosaic virus, and curly top virus.

Tendergreen

Think about 'Tendergreen' if you like to can, freeze, and use your produce in home-cooked meals.

Gardeners and home cooks alike will appreciate the versatility of the 'Tendergreen' snap variety.

High harvests of soft, green, 6-inch pods that are a joy to the taste buds can be expected from this open-pollinated heirloom cultivar.

'Tendergreen' is a popular choice among gardeners since it takes only 60 days to mature, is hardy, and is resistant to mosaic virus.

Stringless Snaps

The thread attached to string beans is something that some gardeners may find appealing. For some, the act of stringing beans can bring back warm memories of their childhood kitchen duty.

For those of us who would rather not have to take on this extra cooking step, however, stringless types are the obvious choice.

Royal Burgundy

If you want to start a conversation, plant a Royal Burgundy vine in your garden. Its stringless pods measure 5 inches in length and have a gorgeous purple color before being cooked (then they turn green). The royal burgundy may thrive in a variety of gardens, even those with cooler temperatures. It is also immune to viruses.

Dragon Tongue

There are no strings on a Dragon Tongue, a Dutch wax relic. The pods have a pale golden color with streaks of purple. In any case, they're more than simply a gorgeous face. Excellent flavor is what makes Dragon Tongue so well-liked among kitchen professionals. It's also very fruitful. The harvest time is 55 days.

Nickel

Nickel, a French baby gourmet filet bean, is one of my all-time favorite green beans. Stringless and a delectable four inches in length, the pods are a must-try. Additionally, it does not develop white mold or brown patches. The average harvest time is 52 days.

Jade

Extremely prolific and tasty, this bean grows skinny, dark green pods that measure between 5 and 7 inches in length. This kind of bush bean usually yields more than others of its kind. The average time to harvest is 56 days.

Bush Kentucky Wonder (Old Homestead)

For good reason, Kentucky Wonder (also known as Old Homestead) is a staple in gardens across the country. The pods are delicate and stringless and grow to a length of 8 inches. Whether eaten fresh or out of a can, their flavor is superb. The harvest time is 55 days.

Tendercrop

This type is another solid option for home gardens since it consistently yields pods that are tender while yet maintaining a crisp texture and flavor. Tendercrop is a high-yielding cultivar that grows well in northern climates. The harvest time is 55 days.

Roma II

The 'Roma II' bush bean is the final option we'll be thinking about. This heirloom variety of open-pollinated beans is known for producing abundant crops of stringless, flat Italian beans that are both delicious and popular with consumers.

When ready, at 50-55 days, the pods, which are a medium green hue and contain white seeds, are 4-5 inches long.

Delicious both fresh and frozen, 'Roma II' is a fantastic bush bean with a sweet and nutty flavor.

The 18-inch-tall bushes are disease- and pest-proof thanks to their resistance to mosaic virus, Northern leaf blight, papaya ring spot, and rust.

Conclusion

This seemingly endless selection of bush bean cultivars may seem overwhelming at first, but since everyone has unique tastes and gardening needs, this diversity of options should help you choose the bush bean variety that thrives in your yard.
