Best Tasting Carrots To Grow Of 2022

If you have a favorite type of carrot that you want to grow more of, go with that. Sugary, pine-parsley, and woody are the three most popular words used to describe the taste of a carrot.

Carrot sweetness is heritable, thus some varieties are guaranteed to be naturally sweeter than others. Carrots grown in organic soil and in an environment with warm days and cool nights have a more robust flavor than those grown in compact dirt.

Some carrots have a sweeter flavor, while others have a parsley flavor, and still others have a more woodsy flavor by nature. Carrots with a mild, sugary flavor are a popular choice for snacking. Carrots taste sweeter when cooked than when eaten raw because heat breaks down the cell walls of the vegetable, allowing the sugars inside to escape.

Carrots develop their full flavor at the same rate. As they mature, their flavor improves. Carrot flavor comes from organic compounds.

Buying Guide

Deep Purple Hybrid

See this magnificent, regal, deep purple carrot. This kind, in contrast to the 'Purple Dragon' I'll talk about later, is purple all the way through and adds an appealing splash of color to salads, snacks, and dips.

The vibrant color diminishes slightly during cooking, so eating it raw is the best way to enjoy it. The mature height of these is between 7 and 8 inches, with fronds that can reach up to 24 inches in height. You can pick them after 75-80 days.

Imperator 58

Wow, such a fantastic name, and what a fantastic veggie! This carrot variety first took up the All-America Selections honor in 1933 and has maintained its popularity ever since. This tried-and-true heirloom variety has stood the test of time.

The 'Imperator 58' is big and tasty, reaching a maximum size of roughly 9 inches, and is remarkably similar to the standard kind sold in stores. For optimal growth, "Imperator 58" seeds should be planted in a loosened soil. An approximate harvest time of 68 days has been calculated.

Kaleidoscope

The rainbow vegetables about which I forewarned you are my weakness make this seed blend an easy recommendation. There are not one, not two, not three, but FIVE lovely hues in there.

You can tell this is a high-quality seed blend by its colorful names: "Atomic Red," "Bambino," "Cosmic Purple," "Solar Yellow," and "Lunar White."

Little Fingers

The 'Little Fingers' variety of carrots and beets may be grown from seed to table in just 55 days.

Don't let its small stature deceive you! Despite its diminutive stature, this sweet root yields a substantial crop even when planted in close proximity to one another. If you have limited area for gardening, this heirloom is the way to go.

Grow this vegetable in full sun and sandy, well-drained soil in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9.

Chantenay

The Chantenay Carrot is a well-liked French heirloom variety of carrot known for its short, conical form, bright orange color, and robust earthy flavor. Even though they have a thin grain, these carrots become too fibrous if picked too late. While their small size makes them suitable for raw consumption, Chantenay Carrots are more often cooked and put to use in applications like roasting, soups, and storage methods including freezing and canning.

The Red Cored Chantenay Carrot and the Royal Chantenay Carrot are two of the most well-liked types of this carrot. Red Cored Chantenay Carrots, as the name suggests, feature a vibrantly hued middle. The roots of Royal Chantenay Carrots are a consistent orange color and taper to a more pointed tip. The average length of a Chantenay Carrot is five inches.

The original Chantenay Carrot has been the basis for the development of numerous commercially successful offspring. Carrots of the Chantenay kind are widely grown, with the Kuroda Carrot and the Hercules Carrot being particularly well-known.

Unlike other species of carrots, Chantenay Carrots do well in thick clay soils and are resistant to splitting and forking. Carrots grown from direct seed in the garden are at their peak freshness and quality when harvested when they have reached full size, about 70 days after sowing.

Nantes

The Nantes Carrot is a heritage carrot from France that is short and fat with a bright orange hue and a subtly sweet flavor. Nantes Carrots, so called because they were first grown in the French city of that name in the Brittany region, are typically between six and eight inches in length, have a thin, smooth skin, and have a relatively blunt end. Because of their lack of taper, Nantes Carrots are ideal for use as carrot sticks. Carrots from Nantes are known for their mild sweetness and crisp, crunchy texture.

The Scarlet Nantes Carrot is by far the most widely consumed of the Nantes family. Napoli Carrots, Bolero Carrots, and Romance Carrots are just a few of the newer carrot cultivars that fall within the Nantes-type umbrella.

This variety of carrot is very simple to cultivate in your garden. Nantes Carrots thrive in rich soil and may be dug up by hand because of their broad shoulders at the top. They take a long time to mature and are ready for harvest about 75 days after being planted in the ground.

Imperator

The Imperator Carrot, a variety of American heirloom carrot, is distinguished by its tall, thin form and vibrant orange hue. These carrots, which get their name from the Latin word for "commander," are the longest of the ordinary carrot varieties at 7 inches to 11 inches in length. In 1933, All-America Selections chose the Imperator Carrot as a winner (Source: AAS Winners).

The Olympus Carrot, Viper Carrot, Envy Carrot, Atomic Red Carrot, and Sugarsnax Carrot are all examples of the Imperator kind of carrots.

The optimal conditions for growing Imperator Carrots are rich, well-drained soil that is free of stones and other obstacles. Clay or rocky soils are not suitable for this variety. Growing time for Imperator Carrots from seed to harvest in an outdoor garden is typically around 75 days.

Kuroda Carrots

Kuroda carrots, an Asian cultivar, are notable for their big, stubby, red-orange taproots and for being exceptionally sweet. Carrots can reach a considerable size, but they can stay juicy and soft even when fully mature. Its sugary sweetness makes it ideal for raw eating or juicing. There are a few different kinds of Kuroda on the market, but they all have the same delicious sweetness and come highly recommended. Kuroda carrots have a moderate tolerance for heat, which is useful for gardeners in climates with warm autumns and springs.

Amarillo Yellow

Carrots of the Amarillo Yellow kind are a vivid neon yellow all the way through. These young carrots are not only beautiful to look at, but they also taste great. You can eat them fresh from the garden or put them in a yellow carrot cake recipe to enjoy their sweet, mild, earthy flavor. Carrots of the Amarillo Yellow variety typically mature to a length of 7 to 8 inches and have a uniform, well-formed shape with only minimal forking.

Red Cored Chantenay

The Red Cored Chantenay is a French heritage stump-root carrot with a broad shoulder and a rounded blunt tip. The flesh is a darker, more reddish orange, while the skin is a brighter orange. This cultivar is excellent raw or shredded into salads, and it can grow to a length of 5 to 6 inches. Carrots of this variety are excellent for storing because of their uniformity and sweetness improves with age. They also grow well in rich soils.

Conclusion

There is no excuse to not include them in pots or in your vegetable garden now that there are so many lovely types available.

Have you ever tried growing any of these varieties before? How have you been doing? Tell me about it in the comments!
